People will have you believe that efficiency and self-expression are on opposite ends of the spectrum. It's a tidy point of view, but ultimately it's constrained by perspective. If you live on a line and look right, you may see order; left, color. However, if you could float above this single spectrum, you'd see that both are really very far one way, and that to the opposite side is something much more existential, something that we can't characterize on the scale of order:
Intent.
Without deprecating into the obvious 'form follows function', art and engineering both play within the bounds of purpose and feeling, but their final form depends less on their intended recipients, and more on their creators. When you make a thing, are you trying to explain something, or are you trying to understand it? How important is it that others who experience it, experience it the same way you do?
A life without intention is not one worth living, but a life overanalyzed was one never lived.
